What Rift records when you download it or use the global API.
This notice covers download and global API request statistics.
Controller
The Impressum lists the controller's identity, postal address, and privacy contact.
Request statistics
Rift collects aggregate download and cloud request statistics by default to measure adoption, understand service demand, and identify HTTP failures. Statistics include the UTC day, country, recognized agent category, operation, HTTP method, and response status. Download statistics also include recognized release and platform. Other release tags share an unknown category.
The service derives country from the request's network location. An existing User-Agent header can identify Codex or Claude; other callers share one category. These values describe the request, so a proxy can change the country and a caller can change the agent category.
The counters contain no IP addresses, installation identifiers, account identifiers, raw User-Agent headers, code, queries, request bodies, or project paths. The service deletes counters older than 90 UTC days during its daily cleanup. Cleanup can take up to one further day. Recoverable database history can retain deleted counters for up to a further 30 days. Download counts include retries and updates. They do not confirm installations or unique users.
Downloading a release directly from GitHub bypasses the download service.
The purpose is to plan service capacity, maintain supported downloads, and identify HTTP failures. Where this processing involves personal data, we pursue those interests under GDPR Article 6(1)(f).
Telemetry settings
Rift sends no separate local activity report and creates no telemetry marker, identifier, or event queue. The counters come from requests needed to download Rift or use the global API. Local-only use sends no telemetry request.
Exclude this project's cloud and update requests from counters:
rift config set --telemetry.disabled=trueExclude Rift's cloud and update requests for every project:
rift config set --telemetry.disabled=true --userThe first command writes [telemetry] disabled = true in the current directory's rift.toml.
The second writes it in ~/.rift/config.toml. A global disable takes precedence over a
project's setting.
RIFT_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=true also disables counters. A false value removes only that
source's disable; it cannot override another source's disable. Downloads and API use continue
to work.
Standalone installers accept RIFT_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=true in their environment; they do
not read these TOML files. Other API clients can send DNT: 1. Opt-out excludes future requests; previous counters
expire under their retention policy. These
settings control Rift's counters; Cloudflare and GitHub have separate processing described below.
Service providers
- Cloudflare hosts the services and stores counters in an EU database. Incoming requests pass through its global network.
- GitHub serves release downloads after a redirect from Rift's download service.
These providers can process request data outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Cloudflare's data processing addendum provides standard contractual clauses for applicable transfers. GitHub's privacy statement describes its transfer safeguards. Their processing and retention are separate from Rift's counters.
Rights and contact
Subject to the GDPR's conditions, you can request access, correction, erasure, restriction, and portability of personal data. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests on grounds relating to your particular situation. Contact the privacy contact listed in the Impressum to exercise these rights or ask questions.
The counters carry no caller identifier or personal event history. The service does not collect additional identifiers to make contributions identifiable. The controller reviews each request and explains whether it concerns data that can be identified.
You can complain to a data protection authority, including the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information.
